Fortuitously, the region's deep clay-limestone and volcanic soils successfully retained vital subsoil moisture, while hillside elevations provided cooling night breezes to protect the grapes' natural acidity. Critical, heavy rainstorms arrived just after mid-August, rescuing the vintage by reactivating the vines and allowing the fruit to complete its maturation with excellent phenolic ripeness.
