Our Story

Matthieu Celerier was born in Bordeaux, France and raised on the left bank close to the famous estate of Chateau Haut-Brion (Pessac Leognan). He spent his youth between the Graves and the Medoc, along with family members and friends who worked in famous Chateaux. He grew up practicing diligently sports while always showing a great interest in fine cuisine. He started to learn how to pair wine with food as it was a natural routine in his family. Former Judo teacher and international athlete with a master’s degree in finance, In Matthieu’s first business venture, he worked as a post-rehab personal trainer. On his days off, he would sneak out of Paris so he could discover new wineries with friends and family. Matthieu enjoyed the similarities between making wine and Judo as it takes for both decades of practices to achieve seriously impressive results. When his wife Maggie was talked into becoming an agent for some of the vintners they knew, Matthieu recommended that Maggie start her own import and distribution business instead. Before they knew it, they were moving to the United States and teamed up to establish Celerier’s Cellar.

Margaret (Maggie) was born in Easton, PA. She grew up on the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey with a Lebanese father and Italian mother. Her family operated a beer distribution for three generations, based in Allentown, PA. Cooking and the beverage industry were a central part of the family business.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management, she worked in the fashion industry for 15 years, ending up with management positions for companies such as Ralph Lauren and Carolina Herrera in New York City. Her career allowed her to travel the world, working in many major cities across the globe. These experiences brought her a significant knowledge related to food and wine that she ended up being able to leverage when leading Celerier’s Cellar with Matthieu.

Maggie ended up being offered an opportunity to work in Paris and moved to France, where she met Matthieu, her future husband. She was able to discover and meet with vintners in the French wineries of Bordeaux, visiting vineyards and learning about the local processes and products. Over time, as strong relationships were developed, some of the vintners voiced an interest in trying to export their wine to the United States, but simply did not trust the large wine brokers and importers to properly represent them. Maggie soon created her company with the mindset to focus on the importing of select French wines. Shortly thereafter, Maggie and Matthieu began working together and moved to the U.S.

Matthieu and Maggie followed their passion and focused their business on the restaurant industry, given the fact that restaurant owners are often savvy when it comes to recognizing the best French wine, while also understanding the value of a wine based on its flavor profile and food compatibility, not simply being limited to the cost or relying only on ratings. Maggie and Matthieu were fortunate enough to turn their passion to success rather quickly (it helped that they had some of the best French wines that France has to offer).

Matthieu handled sales and marketing, while Maggie handled the rest of the operation including logistics, ordering, inventory and other core functions at Celerier’s Cellar. Recently, they invested in Arnaud Boué, believing in his up-and-coming potential as one of the premier wine makers in France – and the focus paid off. Arnaud Boué’s first-time ratings ended up being extremely high – and yet another hand-picked, boutique French vineyard was flowing through the Celerier’s Cellar name.

Simply put, we value family, trust and feed off our passion along with the passion of the vineyards – who are the families that make all this possible. We hope to share our love of wine and passion of how these families “farm” their land to deliver exceptional products..

Celerier's Cellar with Deep Roots

Having grown up in a European household, classic and artisanal wine from the old world was an important fundamental. Creating memories, family gatherings, or just sharing pleasurable moments with friends and family were enhanced by the craftsmanship of great wine. Stefan Gagliano, born in Philadelphia, has always had a passion for the elixir and has taken him on a journey from becoming a sommelier; starting a wine bar; and traveling throughout France to personally experience the creation of their wonderful wines. It was during his time at his wine bar that Stefan met Matthieu and became in awe of the wines he represented. This was the magical moment when their shared passion of French wine and working with some of the finest vineyards in the world led to them working together under the Celerier’s Cellar umbrella to deliver some of the best French wine on the planet to people’s doorsteps.

It was after traveling through France and landing in Los Angeles, when Stefan setup roots (pun intended!) on the west coast, and established Deep Roots Imports, specifically to work with Matthieu and Celerier’s Cellar. In creating Deep Roots Imports, Stefan focused on bringing the exceptional French wines that Matthieu discovered, many of which are exclusive wines from France – while also planning to expand Celerier’s Cellar from his California location. After starting out working with restaurants in the Los Angeles area, the partnership prospered as planned, and now they are able to bring all of the same wonderful French wine to Californians plus other states such as Nevada and Oregon. By partnering with Celerier’s Cellar, Deep Roots Imports has established the west coast headquarters of Celerier’s Cellar, allowing us to share the love of these remarkable wines directly to our customers, and delivered directly to their homes.

From Celerier’s Cellars roots and flagship location in Pennsylvania, we have now leveraged our partnership with Deep Roots, across the country, in California, plus have continued expansion to Oregon and Nevada. Our passion is simply to share the stories and flavors of these hand-crafted treasures, imported from our family of wine producers in France. We look forward to expanding to other European wine producing regions while always living by our simple philosophy:

Find sustainably grown wines from vintners who believe in preserving tradition and taking care of the land that delivers a bounty of simply the finest wines this world has to offer – and sharing the love of these remarkable wines with those who share our passion.
